Description

Neurodyn Aussie Sport is an electrical current application equipment via electrodes in direct contact with the patient. It is a neuromuscular transcutaneous stimulator that uses the microcomputers’ technologies, with operation via touch.
The equipment is a transcutaneous neuromuscular stimulator is a four-channel stimulator with independent controls for current therapy used in Aussie Current (Burst Modulated Medium Frequency), they can be used simultaneously or not. All the parameters’ information chosen by the professional will be shown in an alphanumeric crystal liquid screen.
The Neurodyn Aussie Sport’s stimulus has a waveform that is way more comfortable than many of the other traditional stimulations. Therefore, this stimulus probably is more enjoyable to most patients. The sensation intensity is controlled by adjusting the equipment’s parameters (controls).

The Aussie Current

This Neurodyn produces an Aussie Current, a new generation of electrical currents for stimulation with advantages over the traditional stimulation methods (Russian, Interferential, TENS and FES). This technique is non-invasive, it does not cause dependency and it does not have undesirable collateral damage.
It produces two different frequencies: 1 Khz and 4 Khz, that allows the professional to select according to the therapeutic effect. The 1kHz frequency is used for strengthening or toning the muscles, the 4 kHz one is used for lymphatic drainage and analgesia. The current produces short duration bursts (2 milliseconds in the 1 kHz current and 4 milliseconds in the 4 kHz), with variable frequency of 1 to 120 Hz and intensity from 1 to 180 mA.

The stimulation can be done in the following modes:

  • Continuous mode: in this mode, the stimulation is constant and continuous.
  • Synchronized mode: (with ramps ON, OFF, Rise and Decay) where the 4 channels work at the same time, synchronized. The stimulation sensation follows the time set on the ramps.
  • Reciprocal mode: (with ramps ON, OFF, Rise and Decay) where the channels 1 and 3 work alternately with the channels 2 and 4. The stimulation sensation follows the time set on the ramps.

Operation and Stimulation Modes

Aussie Current Sensorial Stimulation (maximum comfort)

The sinusoidal current with frequency of 4.000 Hz (4 kHz) and burst modulation of 4ms is used in this kind of stimulation. The maximum comfort stimulation produces a smaller torque than the motor stimulation (maximum torque) and may be used, for example, in cases of pain and discomfort generated by different kinds of tissue injuries.
This stimulation form is the best to control de pain via Gate Control Theory, originally presented by Melzack and Wall (1965) as well as due to the release of endogenous opioids. In this case, the necessity is not to produce muscular torque, but to activate the nerve fibers ABeta (large diameter fibers) with minimum small diameter fibers activation A Delta and C (pain).

Aussie Current Motor Stimulation (maximum torque)

The sinusoidal current with frequency of 1.000 Hz (1KHz) and burst modulation of 2ms is used in this kind of stimulation. The frequency of 40-50Hz is indicated for more vigorous contractions. Frequencies over 50Hz produce more torque, but a level of fatigue may occur. The fatigue occasioned by higher frequencies does not happen due to tired muscles fibers, but the result of electrical activity that is no longer capable of activating the contractile apparatus of muscle fibers.
When fatigue is a problem, lower burst frequencies (20-40 Hz) must be used. A smaller torque will be produced, but a lower level of fatigue will be achieved.
Using lower frequencies are recommended for some conditions, like the prevention of post-stroke shoulder subluxation. The treatment must simulate the frequencies normally used physiologically to activate the slow contraction fibers or muscular fibers resistant to fatigue in relatively low activity levels sustained by longer periods of time, aiming to prevent and limited atrophy and the stretching of the joint capsule. Frequencies between 10 Hz and 20 Hz are recommended.

FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)

What really is the Aussie Current?

- The Aussie Current is a therapeutic alternating electrical current with its frequency in the range of kHz with some similarity to the interferential current and the Russian Current. The Aussie Current can be used for relaxation and muscular strengthening.

What are the main differences between the Aussie Current and the Russian Current?

- Both currents are high frequency alternating, but the Aussie Current has two carrier frequencies: 1 KHz with pulse duration equal to 2ms and 4KHz with pulse duration of 4ms. The Russian Current has 2,5 KHz and pulse duration of 10 ms. Research suggests that due to the therapeutic parameters adopted by the Aussie Current, muscle fatigue and discomfort generated by the stimulation gets retarded, making the therapy more comfortable and efficient.

Can the Aussie Current be used for the recovery of the muscular function and pain modulation?

- Yes, it can. The Aussie Current allows the therapist to act in modulating pain charts, in the functional recovery of the skeletal muscles and in the lymphatic stimulation. To do that, the carrier current parameters and the pulse duration must be modified according to each treatment’s objective.

Instructions to Take Care of Your Equipment

  • Avoid areas subject to vibrations.
  • Install the equipment on a firm and level surface, in open air.
  • Do not block ventilation.
  • Avoid humid, hot and dusty environments.
  • Make sure the area around the network cable is free.
  • Do not insert objects into device holes.

Special Care

  • Using different accessories from the ones indicated and compatible with this device may increase the emissions or in the decrease of the equipment’s immunity.
  • The professional must use gel to apply the currents offered by the equipment. One must always use neutral conductor gel, without air to better the current conduction.
  • In case of obesity, the adipose tissue thickness isolates the motor nerve, that may cause a current‘s sensitivity variation.
  • If there is a peripheral neuropathy, there is no answer to the short duration electrical stimulus.
  • It may irritate the skin.
  • The patient must get used to the stimulation on the skin progressively to know how much is tolerable.
